Cooking Up Controversy

In the spring of 2010, Penguin Books Australia was promoting its latest cookbook, Pasta Bible. It was filled with mouth-watering Italian pasta dishes and other culinary delights. But, according to The Guardian, there was a significant error lurking within its pages.

The recipe that was causing an uproar was for a simple dish, Tagliatelle with Sardines and Prosciutto, which required a sprinkling of salt and pepper. However, an unfortunate typo transformed it into a recipe for disaster. Instead of “freshly ground black pepper,” the misprinted recipe called for “freshly ground black people”!

The book’s editors certainly had egg on their faces.

A member of the public spotted the seemingly racist slip and brought it to Penguin Books Australia’s attention. Faced with an unprecedented culinary crisis, the publishing house had no choice but to take drastic measures. It ordered all copies of the cookbook at its warehouse to be destroyed. The cost of scrapping all seven thousand copies, according to The Guardian, amounted to about eighteen thousand U.S. dollars.

Instead of serving up a healthy slice of humble pie and apologizing for the insensitive misprint, the head of publishing actually defended the editors. He said the offence was “quite forgivable” and even dared to criticize anyone who raised concerns about the “silly mistake” as “small-minded.”

That’s no way to turn the page and begin a new chapter.
